Precious in His Sight
|
This is my first painted portrait as well as my first work in oils.
My subject is a young girl from Mozambique, the nation which has captured my heart.
I was inspired to zoom in on her face, to look intently at her gaze.
If her thoughts were known I wonder if this is what she might say…

My outer eyes are white. My skin is brown.
Do you know where I live? It could be in your town.
I could be your daughter, your sister , a neighbor’s little girl.
But to most of you who will view me, I live in “another world”.
My clothes (although you can’t see them) are most likely worn or dirty.
My parents lives are almost over if they are in their upper thirties.
I’ve lost many of my family and friends already at my young age.
Their deaths were caused by extreme poverty, malaria and AIDS.
Often times I am weak and sick as worms fill my belly.
Does the thought of this make you squirm? Do some of your “needs” now seem silly?
Water here is a luxury - especially if it is clean.
There are no stores or doctors around the corner and children’s toys are almost unseen.
Hardship is not a stranger, my ravaged country with much evidence (still) of blight.
Is there anything that you can do? Jesus calls me “Precious in His Sight”?

Matthew 25:40
"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Matthew 25:45
"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
